First approaches for hydrogen production by the depolarized electrolysis of SO2 using phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole membranes

Renewable energy storage and conversion is nowadays a major target for the scientific community. Their into hydrogen clear clean alternative their storage. This work shows, first time, results of SO2 depolarized electrolysis production at high temperature (120–170 °C) using phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes. A standard thermally cure PBI membrane with were used manufacturing MEA two electrolyzers. The benefit was demonstrated but an unexpected behavior occurs voltages higher than 0.8 V when increases. Moreover, cured shows superior performance as compared one. Production sulfur by reduction becomes important drawback advices not operating above 130 °C. Results show that membranes are suitable operation dioxide electrolysis. Increasing beneficial up to certain value potential, showing considerable influence in charge transfer resistance system.
